ATC Hires 2 Alumni as New Staff

Arkansas Teacher Corps is excited to announce two new hires for the 2021-22 school year! Whitney Carter and Jamie Powell were 2018 ATC Fellows and just completed the 3-year fellowship this past May. Both have worked with ATC in part-time roles supporting incoming first-year teachers at the summer institute. Their experiences as fellows will be an invaluable asset to ATC as we work to recruit, train, and retain an even larger cohort of teacher-fellows in the Arkansas Delta! Whitney Carter, Recruitment & Outreach Manager

Whitney assists with the recruitment and selection of ATC Fellows throughout the Arkansas Delta, as well as broader outreach and communication efforts. Whitney is a native of Parkin, AR but moved to Columbus, MS during her high school years. She returned to Arkansas to graduate with a B.S. in business administration from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, AR in 2013 before completing an MBA with a concentration in healthcare management from Capella University in 2016. After working in sales and insurance for several years, Whitney began to explore the field of education in nearby Forrest City as the high school business teacher where she taught Accounting I, Social Media I, Financial Literacy, Survey of Business, Business Law I over the past four years. She has also served as the Forrest City High School yearbook sponsor and career/technical education department chair. Joining Arkansas Teacher Corps as a 2018 fellow, Whitney has also served as a summer mentor in 2019 and director of logistics for the summer institutes in 2020 and 2021. Most recently, she has collaborated with the Arkansas Department of Education to facilitate professional development in the areas of accounting and Quickbooks. Known to her peers as the “Certification Queen”, continued education is a key focus for Whitney. Inspired by the quote “the sky is NOT the limit because beyond the sky there’s still space!”, Whitney strives for every scholar she encounters to dig deep for that determination to keep going and become what is needed for their own success in life!

 

Jamie Powell, Teacher Development Manager

Jamie coaches and supports teachers through classroom observations and debriefs, in addition to coordinating and facilitating professional development. A native of central Arkansas, she attended high school at the Arkansas School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Hot Springs, AR where she also served as a community leader, student government representative, Model UN representative, and Future Business Leaders of America member. She was the recipient of the 2010 Susan B. Anthony/Fredrick Douglass Leadership Award and 2011 Daniel Benton Memorial Scholarship for accomplishments in American History. After serving two years as a residential assistant and receiving multiple academic scholarships, Jamie graduated from Hendrix College in Conway, AR in 2014 with a B.A. in English (concentration in literary studies) and a minor in politics. She utilized her leadership experiences from school as a general manager of Domino’s for several years before joining ATC as a 2018 fellow teaching 5th & 6th grade mathematics and science at ScholarMade Achievement Place in Little Rock, Ark. Since then, Jamie has served in a variety of leadership roles including ScholarMade Teacher Leader Fellow/Multi-Classroom Leader and two-time ATC Summer Mentor. As a full-time teacher coach, she draws upon her own fellowship experiences to provide her fellows with the individualized development and holistic personal support that they need to succeed.
