ATC hosted two virtual site visits on September 18-20 for the new Arkansas State Review and Science of Reading Audit that are required under LEARNS for all 26 educator preparation programs in the state.
The State Review is a new process to elevate key data and program experiences that align with the state’s vision for high-quality teacher preparation of teachers that are day-one ready, including key indicators in the areas of candidate recruitment, preparation, completion, licensure, employment, and effectiveness. Although most data are evaluated annually, candidate preparation is assessed through the on-site review every six years and involves a review of program documents; observations of coursework, classroom teaching, and coaching conversations; and focus groups of candidates, mentor teachers, instructors, coaches, and school partners. The review team includes six representatives from K-12 and higher education institutions, review coordinators from TNTP, and DESE staffers.
The SOR Audit is specific to the K-6 licensure pathway and provides actionable recommendations for improving how we train and support teachers with literacy instruction. The SOR team includes three reviewers from TPI-US and involves additional observations of coursework, classroom teaching, and coaching conversations, as well as 1:1 interviews with candidates, coaches, school partners, and ATC staff. Written reports will be provided in the coming weeks, at which point we will begin developing a new five-year strategic plan that addresses the areas of identified need and puts ATC on a path to success for the next on-site review.
