Matt plans and manages the seven-week Summer Institute, including building partnerships with an Arkansas K-12 school district to provide Fellows with clinical teaching experience. The son of a Mississippi educator, Matt leverages his B.S. in communications with a minor in creative writing from Mississippi College and his MPS from the Clinton School in Public Service to facilitate personal and professional growth within the nonprofit sector. Since 2016, Matt has served as the Learning and Americorps Experience Manager with City Year Little Rock, designing and facilitating over 350 hours of training and development for 55 Americorps members annually including the Basic Training Academy for Team Leaders and Days of Service with community partners from central Arkansas. In his role as founder and CEO of the Freedman Society, Matt has planned and led professional development for teachers and administrators in the areas of learning strategies, school leadership, student-focused curricula, and diversity/equity. Furthermore, his collaboration on projects with the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, Literacy Action of Central Arkansas, and Arkansas Mentoring and Networking Association will be critical for ensuring all Fellows are able to implement science-based reading interventions in the classroom.
